Old photo taken by Special Deputy Wilt Nelson (Retired) at an accidnt scene.Three of the Four traffic safety officers.

Traffic safety has come a long way when you compare these two photos.  It was not unusual (many years ago) for police agencies both large and small to use bread trucks, personal station wagons or whatever vehicle that could be used to serve as a hearse.  Today our traffic safety division is staffed with four highly trained deputies in accident investigation and reconstruction.

Our traffic officers use semi-marked cars with radar units. Similar patrol units are displayed in the photograph above with three of our four traffic safety officers.  We have two traffic officers that are certified by the State of Michigan as Child seat belt inspectors.  Traffic Safety Deputies work with the Livingston County Road Commission conducting traffic surveys and we also  take  requests for selective enforcement.  Selective enforcement is when a citizen calls our department and tells us about a traffic problem that they are having.  Armed with the information of who is causing the problem, when they are causing the problem and exactly where, Deputies can then sit back in their semi-marked cars using a Laser unit if necessary to (hopefully) solve the problem.

 Traffic officers also perform these duties as well;
Speak to drivers education classes upon request.
Speak to citizens groups on request
Work with the school transportation departments on a "flasher offender" program, where the bus driver's fill out a form when they witness someone disregard their red stop lights.  The Deputy then will either write a ticket or a warning to the registered owner of the vehicle.
Conduct seat belt and speed surveys
Work special events; Fowlerville Fair, Dawn patrol, Fireworks, Car Cruz, etc.
Co-Sponsor the Livingston County Traffic Safety Committee and the Huron Valley Regional Traffic Safety Committee (Livingston, Washtenaw and Monroe counties). The traffic committees are comprised of Law Enforcement, Road Commission, M.D.O.T., School Transportation, Medical responders, AAA Insurance and others.
