LIVINGSTON COUNTY SHERIFF DEPARTMENT TACTICAL RESPONSE TEAM

Recognizing that a highly skilled, highly trained police Tactical unit would often substantially reduce the risk of injury, and or loss of life in a critical incident , the Tactical Response Team was established.

HISTORY

On June 28th, 1999 at the direction of Sheriff Donald Homan the Livingston County Sheriff Department Tactical Unit was formed. The original unit was comprised of five (5) Deputies and a Lieutenant, this team was initially formed as a Raid Entry Team, comprised to perform high risk warrant arrests.

Over time four (4) additional deputies and a Sergeant were added to the team. The additional personnel allowed the team to go from a Raid Entry Team to a Tactical Unit. The teams capabilities, equipment, proficiency, personnel and training have greatly increased since 1999.

TACTICAL TEAM

In order to be considered for this unit, a Deputy must pass a rigorous physical fitness exam each year. The Deputy also must pass an oral board examination and show that he/she has the mental and physical make up that is needed to be able to perform tactical planning and deployment.

All team members have attended numerous SWAT training schools and have been trained in a wide range of tactical maneuvers and applications.

NEGOTIATORS

The Tactical Response Team is also comprised of five (5) highly trained hostage negotiators. These negotiators are present on all high risk tactical deployments. Their training, education and experience are invaluable, normally ending many tactical situations without the use of force.

TRAINING

This team was formed as a resource to draw from when a critical incident occurs. The team is designed to work in cooperation with other tactical teams. The team has trained in cooperation with the Wayne County SWAT team, Oakland County Tactical Unit, East Lansing Tactical Response Team as well as the Brighton City Tactical Unit.

The Livingston County Tactical Response Team pledges to prepare and train for those unknown dangers and emergencies that may present themselves to the citizens of our county.
