Narcotics - LAWNET
Back Home

The Livingston County Sheriff Department does not have its own narcotics enforcement team.  However,  we have two deputies assigned to LAWNET, (Livingston and Washtenaw Narcotics Enforcement Team).  LAWNET is a concept team which is headed by the Michigan State Police, and has members from a variety of police agencies.

Having an officer or two from several departments is very beneficial for numerous reasons.  LAWNET is cost effective because part of the funding for the unit comes from grants. It would be practically impossible for each department who participates to support their own drug team.  Also, by bringing the departments together we can draw on the resources from each department, and the networking among the officers is invaluable.

LAWNET has been responsible for getting an enormous amount of drugs off the streets since its inception.  The team also actively takes property and money under the forfeiture statute.  The forfeiture law was designed to give police agencies the ability to take away the tools of the trade of suspected drug users and dealers.  This includes homes, boats, cars, money, real estate, etc....

LAWNET also works in conjunction with the Prosecuting Attorneys office, the State Attorney General, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms on a regular basis.
